The Q&A Archives: Corn & Weeds

Question: What can I use to prevent the growth of grass and weeds where I have planted corn?

Every year I plant sweet corn and the grass and weeds take over and the farmers corn just adjacent to my lot grows beautiful feed corn without one blade of grass or weeds.

Answer: The commercial grower is probably using a number of methods to control weeds, including pre and possibly post emergent herbicides. At home, you may be able to use selected herbicides in your corn planting but many gardeners are able to control weeds effectively enough in a small patch by timely mulching along with possibly some early season light hoeing.
