Last year I planted 4 bare root raspberry plants. The took root and even produced a few berries. This year I am noticing small clusters of leaves, that look exactly like the main raspberry plants, popping up out of the soil all around the "mother" plants. I was wondering if these new clusters could be affecting the growth of the new canes and should I be pruning these little buggers off? |
You may be seeing runners from the original roots. Raspberries require regular pruning and thinning to keep in top production. The following web page from University of Nebraska extension has excellent information and diagrams on home raspberry care. http://www.ianr.unl.edu/pubs/h... |
That url above page didn't exist. The raspberry plant I have fruits in Spring and again in Fall. I started with one plant in the Spring of this year I have six now. You can trim out the runners or give them away. One person I know puts a tarp down on a path on each side of her raspberries then mulch it keeps the runners from going off where she doesn't want them. Also she trims aways the old stalks that look like twigs. |
