I would like to make a container garden, and the catalog syas to space the plants about 7 inches apart. Is that true for a round container as well? I thought that three plants in a large round container would be okay, but they will be closer than 7 inches apart that way.

In container planting, the plants are usually crowded together a bit closer than in the garden to make the display look more full. An odd number of plants will usually make a more pleasing arrangement thna an even number.
