The Q&A Archives: Drainage for Window Box

Question: What do I have to put into a window box to plant my herb garden? Specifically, do I need to put a layer of stone at the bottom for drainage, or can I just put the soil in the window box?

Answer: Your window box should have drainage holes in the bottom to allow excess water out. Gravel actually takes up space that is better filled with soil that roots can grow into.
