I was recently in the New England area and saw them putting down a very black, fine and rich-looking mulch. My friend thought that it was called "I Can't Believe It's Not Licorice Root". I do not know for sure if she is correct. It looked great. I am wondering if it is available in the Chicago area and if this is the real name of it. Do you know where I could purchase it?

Ground licorice root is occasionally available as mulch. You might try calling local landscape suppliers and see if they stock it. Different materials are available in different areas, and usually the supply yards will stock the local materials because they avoid the shipping costs; so, they may have it or else a local substitute.
