Can I prune the dead limbs off my japanese maple tree?
What causes the limbs to die?

If the branches are truly dead, they may be pruned off neatly. There are numerous possible reasons ranging from ice damage to insect or disease problems to lack of moisture to excess moisture. You might want to take a photo and discuss the possible causes with your local county extension.
