The Q&A Archives: Boron For Tomatoes

Question: I understand that tomatoe plants need Boron as a trace element in the soil to continue to producte tomatoes. How much boron should I add? Can I purchase Boric Acid in the store and mix it with water? In this case, how much per square yard is required? and what would be the ratio of boric acid to water?

Answer: The need for boron is very minimal, and it may be naturally sufficient in your area. You would not want to overapply it because it is potentially toxic to plants if present in excess. You might want to check with your county extension as to the typical need for it in your soil and their recommendations for applying it. Their phone number is 788-1388.
