The Q&A Archives: "winter Growth On Stored Dahlia Bulbs"

Question: The dahlia bulbs I had in winter storage developed growth 8-10". Should these be snapped off prior to planting?

Answer: Don't break off the sprouts - they're the stems of this year's plants. Just plant your tubers carefully and the sprouts will continue to grow, eventually emerging from the soil. Next year you'll want to check the tubers in March to see whether or not they've begun to sprout. As soon as the buds begin to swell you can plant the tubers in the ground.

Hope your dahlias produce big, beautiful flowers this summer!
