| Last Fall I planted red onion sets. It is now April and they still have no bulb at their ends. Since my garden space is very limited, and this year this same plot must be used for my tomatoes, can I gently dig up the onions, and plant my tomatoes with the onions near them as "companion" plants? | Onion, Allium cepa, is an edible bulb root native to central Asia and the Mediterranean region. They prefer cool temperatures in their beginning growth and warmer temps as they near maturity. It doesn't sound as though your onion sets have begun to grow yet. Just for reference, long day onions require 13-16 hours of daylight, and short-day onions require only 12 hours of daylight. Onions that grow well anywhere are considered day-neutral. With that said, you can dig the onions and move them since it's still early in the season. Tomatoes make fine garden bed companions.
