The Q&A Archives: Fast Growning Trees

Question: We recently moved to a new home in a development. We placed a deck on the back of the house, which unfortunately faces south and gets sun all day long. Can you suggest any trees that grow quickly (to about 25 - 30 feet) and will offer shade, so we can get more use from our deck?

Answer: Most trees will take a significant amount of time to reach that size. You might consider one of the modern disease resistant crabapples, an ornamental flowering cherry, or a redbud to shade the deck. In the meantime, you could use an arbor structure over top of the deck and grow vines on it or attach shade cloth netting to it.
