The Q&A Archives: Trimming Dwarf Alberta Spruce

Question: Can the dwarf alberta spruce be trimmed to maintain shape for a three foot square space as it develops over time?

Answer: Its mature size is 6-8 feet tall and 4-5 feet wide. Generally, it is a better idea to choose a plant whose mature size matches the space you have, otherwise you have to do constant pruning. Excessive pruning opens up a plant to pest and disease problems. However, this tree does tolerate pruning/shaping better than some others, sometimes being used as a topiary plant.
