Some vegetables that will grow well in the winter in Los Angeles and tolerate shade are any of the greens such as spinach, mustard, arugula, lettuce, Swiss chard and collards. Broccoli family vegetables such as broccol, kale, and cabbage also can be grown now. These are best purchased as transplants at this time of year from a local garden center. Root crops such as carrots, beets and radishes should also perform okay. Obviously, all these crops would grow and produce better in full sun, but they will tolerate shade and produce a small crop.
