| This past winter one of the top branches of our acer palm red split, probably due to weight of smow. The branch is about 1 inch thick and both sides of the split are still attached to the main trunk of the tree (about 1 3/4 inches thick).. We want to know what to do save the branch and help this plant recover and continue to grow. Should we tie the split branch together, or tape it? Thanks for any advice you can give. |
| If the split had been taped immediately it might have grafted itself back together, however at this late date it is unlikely to heal itself and will probably have to be removed. You might wish to consult with a professionally trained and certified arborist specializing in ornamental trees and see how best to prune out the damage with an eye toward maintaining a pleasing shape to the tree down the road. These trees are prone to damage in ice or heavy snow storms and sometimes a little preventive pruning can help minimize the potential for extreme damage. The arborist should be able to help you with this as well. I'm sorry about your tree. |
