The Q&A Archives: Black Plastic

Question: I want to use black plastic in the garden to keep the weeds out. What do I use to secure the plastic once we put it down?

Answer: Most gardeners use u shaped metal pins to pin down the plastic aroudn the edges. You could also weight down the edges with boards or bricks or hold it down with a layer of mulch. In most instances, a natural mulch is preferred instead of the black plastic. The reason for this is that the plastic is impervious to air and water and it does not rot down to feed and improve the soil the way an organic mulch would.
