How do I keep the squirrels from digging up and eating my freshly planted bulbs? |
Squirrels can be a real pest. Some gardeners find that dipping the bulbs into a mole or rodent repellent such as Ropel helps. Other gardeners will use wire mesh on the soil surface or a wire mesh cage for the bulbs. Still others find that the repellent sprays developed for squirrels and sprayed in the area can be helpful, or use a home made spray based on garlic and/or red pepper. Sometimes watering the area thoroughly immediately after planting helps settle the soil and deters them as a result. Another method is to plant them very deep, say ten inches down. In my experience, squirrels do seem to leave daffodils alone for the most part while they devour tulips and crocus. I hope this gives you some options. |
