You could plant the lily of the valley in a pot if you are able to keep the soil moist. This plant also prefers a rich soil and grows best in a shady location. The bloom period is short, then the foliage grows until fall when it goes dormant for the winter. For the winter, you could "plant" the pot in the ground, you could insulate it in some other way, or you could store the pot in an unheated garage or other similar protected location. During winter keep the soil only barely moist, it may not need watering for weeks on end.
