I have a large smoke bush that has never bloomed except for a few tiny clusters of flowers, but never the lovely plumes I've seen on other such bushes in the area. Any suggestions?

Smoke bush (Cotinus coggygria) can grow to 25 feet if given fast drainage and drought-like conditions in the summer time. Its nature is to grow shrubby, about as wide as it is tall. The purple puffs grow at the ends of the branches, so wait until the blossoms fade and then prune back one-third to one-half of the new growth. This will encourage new flowering shoots on your bush.
