I need to know when my small pumpkins will begin to grow, when to determine when they are ripe, andhow much care they need. thanks |
Pumpkins are planted outside after all danger of frost and once the soil has warmed up. They can be started from seed or transplant, but seed is the norm. (Planting too early can cause the seed to rot and frost will kill a transplant.) Once the vine starts to grow it will cover ground fast. It will begin blooming and pumpkins will eventually form at the site of female blossoms that have been fertilized. The pumpkins will ripen in about 100 days (or more) and can be picked when the color is good and the rind has hardened up so that you can't pierce it with your fingernail. Pumpkins do best in full sun and average to rich soil. |
