What type of hedge = I have a summer house in Berlin MD. Our lot is wooded (pines, holly) Can't put in fence and would like to start hedge around entire lot (shade/sun). Hedge should be very hardy, disease-resistant, keep dog from going under or jumping at least 4'. Go down few full weeks out of year and weekends so won't be able to water daily when plant after first week, will this be a problem. After reading other questions/answers I don't think Privet is the way to go.

It is very difficult to find a plant that will thrive in sun and shade both, and in all honesty I can't think of anything that will keep a dog in for any length of time. Establishing any new planting does take care and attention until the plants have grown a good sturdy root system. A weekly deep watering is more or less critical if it doesn't rain during that first season. BAsed on your criteria it sounds like a fence might be the better choice.
