| I have heard that snakes like berry bushes. Is there any way I can deter them from coming to my bushes? I have cats, dogs, and keep them trimmed and well mulched but I'm afraid to pick berries and be bitten by a copperhead. |
| In my experience, snakes can be attracted to any type of garden and can actually help in controlling slugs, voles and other nuisances. Most snakes are also shy and prefer to disappear rather than confront a person. Snakes tend to be territorial, so that a population of nonvenomous snakes can crowd out less desirable snakes. Copperheads, however, may be dangerous to a small animal or a child and if they are in the nearby vicinity could possibly be candidates for relocation. A local naturalist or game commission staff should be able to assist your in locating someone. You might also keep in mind that copperheads tend to be nocturnal and so avoid those areas at night. |
