I am puting in a new flower bed - approximately, 8ft x 20 ft. It gets mostly sun. I would like to have a mix of perennials, perhaps a flower tree and different types of textured shrubs, ie. blue spruce, rhodedendrums, etc.

Any ideas on how to proceed. Suggestions for plants or sites and books to choose plants?

You might want to take a look at some of the books in the Dummy series such as the guide to gardening and then the book on perennials. They provide plant lists, sample plans, directions for evaluating and improving the soil, and then procedures for selecting plants, installing them, and caring for them afterwards.

As you develop your plan, one of the hardest but most important things is to try to keep in mind the mature sizes of the tree and shrubs you want to use so that they have enough room to grow over the coming years. Have fun with your project!
