The Q&A Archives: Gardinia Flower Size Decreases

Question: I have a gardenia plant that I bought 3 years ago. Initially it had large size flowers. Presently it just yields small size flowers. What should I do for it to yield large size flowers?

Answer: I'd suggest fertilizing with a phosphorus source, which promotes blooms. You can probably find a fertilizer formulated for gardenias, or if not, use one with a higher middle number, such as 15-30-15. You can also pinch off some of the flower buds if there are many, as the plant will have the same amount of energy to expend on fewer blooms so they will be larger.
