Mulch is great to help retain soil moisture, reduce weeds, and organic mulch breaks down it provides nutrients to the soil. Gravel or stones will still perform the first two functions, just doesn't add anything to the soil. So, I prefer an organic mulch, but many people like the look of gravel or rock. With any mulch, don't let it touch the stem or trunk of the plant. Leave several inches open in a ring around the plant tissue.
