When and how do I prune a very overgrown Rose of Sharon? |
Rose of Sharon blooms best when pruned back annually during the winter months. Simply removing the previous season's growth, leaving just two buds will control the size and promote lots of new blooms. Since yours is overgrown, begin by removing all the dead wood and anything non-productive. Trim back the remaining branches by one third. If the shrub is still too large, selectively prune out some of the older branches, cutting them down to ground level. Be careful not to take too much off the plant at one time or it will become stressed. This winter you can prune it back some more if it's still unruly. |
