daylillies have taken over my garden. what's the best way to kill/remove them?

normally i'd dig, but their roots are 5" deep and so tightly woven, it's like cutting into a potato. thank you.

What a great description! Sometimes it reaches the point where the most practical option is to use an herbicide containing glyphosate. Be sure to read and follow all of the label instructions including allowing ample time for the chemical to be translocated to the roots.
