I have a weeping purple beech planted about two years ago. It does not weep. I was advised to put weights on branches which I did last year. Took weights off for winter. Just put weights back on. Seems all the new growth reaches up toward light. Am I taking the right action? Will it ever weep on its own? When is best time to prune? |
Many weeping trees send new growth upward at first, close to the trunk, and then it weeps with age. This may be what your tree is doing. If your tree was grafted, it is also possible that you are seeing growth from the root stock instead of from the grafted top. Growth from the root stock should be removed promptly, as soon as it appears. (Buds growing below the graft can simply be rubbed off.)Pruning can be done in early summer if needed but should be limited to a minimum. |
