Abelia should be pruned in later winter to promote vigorous shoot growth in spring. If pruning is performed later, after new growth has begun, many flower buds will be removed, thus reducing and possibly eliminating blossoms. On a mature shrub, cut one third of the branches back to the ground annually to encourage new, vigorous growth. I suspect you'll want to wait until next year to start your annual pruning routine. Enjoy!
