Saintpaulia ionantha, or African Violet, is one of the most popular housplants around. They like temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees F and high humidity. You might want to place the pot on a saucer filled with gravel so that excess water can drain from the pot and help increase the humidity near the plant. African Violets prefer an acidic soil, in fact there are special potting soils made just for them. When you water, try not to put water directly on the crown of the plant. Pull off any yellowing leaves and fertilize when the plant is actively growing with a slightly acid fertilizer. African Violets bloom best when pot bound or crowded. Bright , indirect light encourages the most blooms.
