Living on Long Island, is it possible to grow celery? If so, how does one get started and where do I obtain the seeds or roots? |
Assuming you mean the celery stalks that one purchases in the store, it can be grown, but it is more difficult than most veggies for the home gardener. (Those pale stalks are blanched, by the way.) Celery needs about 120 days to grow and mature, so your growing season is long enough. Celery needs rich fertile soil and a constant supply of water. Side dress with a balanced fertilizer every month to ensure big stalks. To blanch, cover the stalks with an empty milk carton with the ends removed. You don't need to cover the leaves, but it needs to stay on about 10 days before harvesting to achieve the blanching. Burpee sells celery seeds. Search on 'celery' on their website, www.burpee.com. |
