WE HAVE A WHITE PINE TREE APPROX. 6 - 8 FT TALL.
IT HAS A WHITE COTTONEY SUBSTANCE ALL OVER THE TRUNK AND ON THE BRANCHES. I SCRAPED SOME OFF WITH A STICK. ITS VERY SOFT JUST LIKE COTTON. WHAT IS IT? IS IT A PROBLEM? LOOKS LIKE ONE. NEVER HAD IT BEFORE. HOW DO I GET RID OF IT OR WHAT DO I DO?

Unfortunately, based on your description I am unable to identify the pest in question by long distance. It may possibly be the pine adelgid as pictured and discussed at
http://www.ext.vt.edu/departme...

Since the infestation is extensive, I would strongly suggest you contact your local county extension for a definite identification of the problem and their suggested methods of dealing with it. Their phone number is 526-6293. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.
