My asparagus grows a few inches then the stems become mushy and die. I think this is from a fungus. Can it be cured (how?) or is the bed doomed?

There are several possible causes for asparagus to become mushy and die back including freeze damage as well as diseases. I would suggest you consult with your county extension (643-1660) as to the exact identification of the problem and then suggestions for what to do next.
