Which culinary herbs would be best suited for containers for taste and hardiness in my zone?

Many herbs will do well in containers over the summer. You might try different kinds of basil, parsley, dill and cilantro as well as lemon grass and lemon verbena. These are all treated as annuals. Some plants that can be overwintered indoors as potted plants would include rosemary and the bay tree. Perennials to try would include sage, chives, lavender, the various mints, thymes and oregano. The perennials may or may not survive the winter in containers, but will have a better chance if you can move the container to a sheltered spot and insulate the rootballs somehow.
