| When should I plant garlic? Does garlic have special soil requirements? |
| Plant garlic in the fall about the same time you would plant daffodil and tulip bulbs. (Columbus Day is a traditional bulb-planting date in many parts of the country.) Garlic requires rich soil and good drainage. Choose the largest cloves you can find for planting, and space the cloves 4"-6" apart, and 1"-2" inches deep. After the soil freezes, mulch the area with straw to prevent the bulbs from being heaved from the ground by the soil's freeze/thaw cycles. Leave the straw in place next spring to maintain soil moisture and prevent weed competition. You should be able to harvest garlic planted in October the following July. |
