The Q&A Archives: Pruning Rose-of-sharon

Question: When is the best time to prune Rose-of-Sharon? Mine have gotten quite tall and unruly.

Answer: These shrubs can withstand heavy pruning if necessary. The best time to do it is in winter while they are dormant. Pruning too late in the growing season (eg spring into summer) will result in a loss of blooming wood because they bloom on the current year's growth.
