I have three bradford, friutless pears along my driveway. They are planted in the grass. The problem is the grass under the tree has been taken over by what appears to be root stems/shoot. They make it look untidy. What can we do to prevent/stop these shoots from growing up out of the ground where we don't want them? I think they are part of the trees root system. If you pull on them they come out and sometimes with the trees roots.

It is very unusual for the root system to send up a forest of shoots through the lawn. If this is truly what is happening, I would suggest you consult on site with a professionally trained and certified arborist as to the cause and what to do about it. Alternatively, you may find that these are in fact seedlings coming up (some ornamental pears do set viable seed) and that quick attention in early spring will take care of the problem.
