Horticultural oil, neem-based insecticides or Btk can be used against cankerworms. Read the product label carefully before using to make sure it is formulated for your problem. Other control methods include: cultivating around trees, which kills or exposes the pupae in the soil; putting sticky bands around the trunk during periods of adult activity (Feb or March for spring cankerworms; early October for fall cankerworms); check branches and under loose bark for eggs masses and destroy them; shake caterpillars out of low branches or hand pick them.
