Should asparagus ferns that grow in the spring be allowed to remain throughout the growing season, or should they be cut down? My beds were established last spring and seem to be doing well, but since it is too soon to be harvesting I'm not sure what to do about the fern growth.

After each harvest season, and for the first season for new plantings, the ferns (spears which have grown out all the way) are allowed to grow and build the plant's strength. They are critical for the plant's survival. They are cut down and removed in late fall after frost.
