The Q&A Archives: Companion Plants For Asparagus

Question: What do you recommend as companion plants for asparagus? My asparagus is in raised beds, and I wonder what would be a suitable companion plant which wouldn't be an overly competitive bed-mate.

Answer: Asparagus are such grossly heavy feeders that they are traditionally mulched to avoid weed growth and not planted between at all. Their root systems underground are huge and immediately after harvest stops the plants create shade. You might try something inconsequential such as leaf lettuce.
