Chaste tree or Vitex agnus-castus blooms on new wood late each season and will continue blooming as long as the plant is in active growth during the summer. For this reason you might want to water it to keep the soil moist (not sopping wet) during the summer. You might also provide it with a heavy mulch over the winter time. It may experience some winter dieback, especially during the estalishment phase. Since it blooms on new wood this will not affect flowering. For best winter survival, however, it should be planted in a well drained location. Full sun is fine. An annual application of compost and/or a complete granular fertilizer such as 10-10-10 each spring should be adequate, expecially in a flower border where the soil is well prepared. |
