We planted portulacas started by seed along the sidewalk entrance. The plants are large and producing many flowers only one problem. The blooms fade in color and close by mid-afternoon. We have grown them previously in a different part of the country and the blooms stayed opened til evening time. What could be causing the blooms not to remain open?

This is typical of some varieties of portulaca, particualrly older varieties. Certain varieties have been specially developed to stay open all day.
