The Q&A Archives: Shrubs For Damp & Shady Area

Question: Our backyard is bordered by a stream (approx.
2-3 feet below retaining wall) that occasionally floods. It is also always damp and very shady in the area that borders/sits atop the retaining wall. What would be the best shrubs to plant there? (We also have an occasional deer.

Answer: For the growing conditions, you might try summersweet clethra or itea or possibly the variegated shrub dogwoods or even the evergreen inkberry holly, Ilex glabra. Deer however will munch on nearly any plant if they are hungry or in the habit of browsing in a given location.
