Snails can come in with potted plants or can live naturally in the area. They are a natural part of the decay process, similar to slugs and other creatures. They can be controlled by hand picking, by raking leaf litter and mulch to disturb it early in the spring and thereby expose overwintering pests, and by using a commercial slug and snail control. Diatomaceous earth sprinkled on the soil surface can also control them, if they are on the ground and not up in your plants.
