| The answer to your question depends to some extent the varieties you are growing (for example, little cherry tomato vines, large indeterminate vines reaching 8 feet, or small determinate patio tomatoes) and how you plan to support them. Whether tied to posts or grown in cages, you still need to leave ample room between them for you to walk and harvest, for the sun to reach the plants, for the roots to spread without undue competition, and for air circulation to reduce the chance of fungal infection or disease or pests spreading from plant to plant. To some extent too you can expect a very healthy plant to produce proportionately more than two less healthy crowded plants. |
