| I am having trouble growing anything in one of my flower beds. It is a raised bed that doesn't get much rain water and only evening sun. However, I think my problem my be my cat. I have tried day liles, strawberries, annuals, and I am on my second try for daylilies. I am able to find lots of suggestions for keeping the cats out, but what about the urine and droppings already in the soil? I hear that the ammonia in the urine could be my problem. What can I do about this? |
| Cat and dog urine is high in nitrogen, so it basically overfertilizes, burning plant roots. Definately clean out the droppings, as cat (and dog) droppings can contain parasites that can be transmitted to humans. As for the urine build-up, about the best you can do, short of replacing the soil, is water heavily to leach it away. You could also incorporate plenty of compost, which would improve the soil. However, strawberries and daylilies like plenty of sun (6-8 hours minimum), as do most annuals. When you say it's only getting evening sun and limited water, that could be a problem. |
