Hyacinth bulbs will take 10 -12 weeks to force into bloom. Start by planting bulbs in special bulb forcing planters, or any shallow container. Use a good potting mix; fill the planter about half full. Arrange the bulbs so they are spaced about 1/2 inch apart, with the tops (tapered end) pointing up. Then add more soil until just the tips of the bulbs are visible. Water the pot thoroughly, then let it drain well.

Hyacinth bulbs need a chilling period to develop a good root system before they bloom, so place them in a cool (35-45F), dark place for about eight weeks. When the top sprouts are about 2 inches tall, bring them into a light, warm area, and they will continue to grow and flower.

(Some suppliers sell pre-chilled, or pre-cooled, bulbs, which are ready to go. Follow the directions that come with the bulbs.)
