SHould the root system for the Alice Du Pont Mandevilla be dug up at the end of each season, or can it be left in the ground?

This plant is not winter hardy in cold climates. For this reason it is often grown as a container plant to facilitate moving it indoors for the winter as a houseplant or into a greenhouse. It could also be planted in the ground and then dug in early fall and potted up for the winter.
