The Q&A Archives: Planting Hostas Surrounded By Stones

Question: Can I plant hostas where they get am sun and would be surrounded by stones?

Answer: You could plant hostas in morning sun if they will have a moist soil, in a drier soil combined with heat reflected form the rocks this could be too much sun. I would caution however that rocks are not the best mulch for hostas, in part because they hold heat and in part because they do not break down over time and feed the soil. They may also harbor slugs which will feast on hosta.
