The insect most commonly called Potato Bug is the Jerusalem cricket. These guys occasionally feed on potato tubers, but mostly they eat other insects and are considered beneficial in the garden. If you're having trouble with your potatoes, why not grow them above-ground? You can make an enclosure with chicken wire, layer straw on the soil surface, plant your seed potatoes, then layer additional straw as the potato plants grow. This will keep your spuds out of harm's way without having to resort to using pesticides against the Jerusalem crickets.
