This can be a difficult area to plant due to possible over and underground utilities as well as restricted root area, typically compacted soil, and width restrictions for vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Often, this is not a recommended planting area as a result. If it seems that there is space and other conditions are favorable, you might consider smaller more upright forms of crabapple or ornamental pear, or possibly the tree lilac. Your local town street tree commission may also have some suggestions based on its own preferences and research.
