The Q&A Archives: Too Late To Plant Lilac Bush-june 1st

Question: I want to plant a dwarf lilac bush. I live in east-central Iowa. It is the 25th of May. Is it too late in the season to plant one ?

Answer: Container grown plants can be planted almost any time the soil can be worked. Be sure to keep the shrub watered so that the soil stays evenly moist (not soggy) all summer and fall while it is becoming established.

Bare root plants, in contrast, are normally planted only in very early spring while they are dormant, this allows them to come out of dormancy naturally with the season.
